What does the Tasmanian smoke alarm law actually require?
Photoelectric alarms on every level of the home, in every bedroom and in hallways serving bedrooms. Interconnected so when one goes off, they all go off. 10-year sealed lithium or 240V hardwired, battery-only 9V alarms are no longer compliant for rentals or new builds.
Do landlords need a smoke alarm compliance certificate?
Yes, Tasmanian rental law requires working compliant alarms at every tenancy change, and most insurers and property managers require an annual or biennial written compliance check. We provide a dated certificate suitable for the agent and insurer.
What's the difference between photoelectric and ionisation?
Photoelectric alarms detect smouldering fires (the kind that actually kill people in bedrooms at night) much faster. Ionisation is being phased out, we only install photoelectric and follow the AS 3786 standard.
Should I get hardwired (240V) or 10-year sealed battery?
Hardwired-interconnected with battery backup is the gold standard and what we recommend for new builds and major renos. 10-year sealed lithium interconnected (RF-linked) is excellent retrofit option, no rewiring, full compliance, set-and-forget for a decade.
How much does a typical home cost to upgrade?
A 3-bed single-storey RF-interconnected retrofit is typically $590-$890 supply + install. Hardwired upgrades depend on ceiling access. We quote fixed-price before starting.
Can you do this on rental properties on behalf of the agent?
Yes, direct billing to the agent, scheduled around tenants, compliance certificate emailed same day. Property managers across NW Tas use us for portfolios.
